Number Partners
The aim of Number Partners is to support schools in raising levels of achievement in
maths through the provision of volunteer support.
Volunteers from local companies and other organisations are paired up with one, two or
three pupils to play maths games and activities with them for half an hour each week, most commonly during the lunch break.
The support and encouragement of a Number Partner volunteer can be a crucial factor in
encouraging pupils to see maths as fun and exciting. As well as developing children’s
number and mental maths skills, the scheme helps to develop children’s confidence and
motivation to learn and gives them a positive insight into the business world.
Hackney teachers have described how:
“Working with people they have never met before and understanding that they are there to help
them appreciate maths more, has contributed to a more positive attitude towards maths in those involved.”
“All children are from the higher ability groups and benefit from the opportunity to work in small groups
with supportive adults. The children all look forward very much to their weekly session and the sessions
have enhanced their self esteem.”
